Han and Tang dynasty statues & sculptures
Our collection also includes authentic terracotta statues from the Han dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD) and Tang dynasty (618-907 AD).
The Han and Tang dynasties are considered as two of the greatest dynasties of the Chinese Imperial past. During the Han Dynasty the silk road was established. This road ran from Chang'an (in the province of Xi'an, the present province of Shaanxi) by Sinkiang in Central Asia to the east coast of the Mediterranean. Because of increased trade in Chinese silk, African ivory and Roman incense, the contact between East and West improved and important innovations were made such as porcelain and cobalt blue glazings. The Han dynasty was the first dynasty to create an enormous amount of pottery, mostly as burial gifts, which still remain today.
The period of the Tang Dynasty is often considered by historians as one of the cultural highlights of Chinese civilization. The Tang dynasty is also known for its unique pottery, but is more refined and has coloured glazings than compared to the Han dynasty.
